Heritage sale 3035, lot 30504

This specimen was lot 30504 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 5 Francs 1848-BB MS66 NGC, Strasbourg mint, A lovely example with appealing slate-gray toning and golden highlights. Popular issue featuring Hercules flanked by two maidens." This type is commonly called the "Hercules" and was struck 1848-49 at Paris, Bordeaux, Lyon and Strasbourg. It is common in circulated condition. The "Cérès head" was also struck in 1849. It was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate after World War One.

Recorded mintage: 2,349,728 plus 898,220 for Louis Philippe.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, .7234 troy oz AGW, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, after a design by Augustin Dupré (1748-1833).
