Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 34169

This specimen was lot 34169 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $780. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. Franc, 1808-B. Rouen Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS MS-63. Standing as the only example of the date and mint in the PCGS census, this scintillatingly Choice minor radiates with an abundance of lustrous brilliance. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Spink & Son in 1972 for $35.75)." In 1806 the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed. The bust was revised again in 1807 to add a laurel wreath and struck in this style thru 1808. This date from the Rouen mint is somewhat scarce.

Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
