Sincona sale 26, lot 3124

This specimen was lot 3124 in Sincona sale 26 (Zürich, October 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"France, I. Kaiserreich. Napoleon I. 1804-1815 5 Francs 1808. M, Toulouse. Gutes sehr schön. (France, first Empire, Napoleon I, 1804-15, five francs of 1808, Toulouse mint, good very fine.)"

This issue, from the Toulouse mint, is a fairly common date of a type struck 1807-08. This type was succeeded by the "EMPIRE FRANÇAISE" reverse struck 1809-14. A complete set of this type comprises fifteen date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. The entire production run totaled about 9.4 million pieces. This date is priced[2] about quadruple the common date.

Recorded mintage: 351,028[2].

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, this specimen 24.87 g.
