This coin, called a demi-écu aux branches d'olivier, was the French equivalent of a half dollar. In the coinage system of the ancien régime, the half écu = three livres. The type was struck 1726-41 and is recorded for the Strasbourg mint ("BB") for every year. Strasbourg and Rouen were the only mints to strike this type in 1741, the other mints having switched to the demi-écu au bandeau. The SCWC lists this date as a demi-écu au bandeau, not the demi-écu aux branches d'olivier shown here.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 14.74 g, 0.917 fine silver, 31-33 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by J.-C. Röettiers.
