Jean Elsen sale 140, lot 722

This specimen was lot 722 in Jean Elsen sale 140 (Brussels, March 2019), where it sold for €375 (about US$500 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AV demi-louis d'or aux lunettes, 1729, Besançon. D/ B. drapé à g., tête nue. R/ Ecus ovales de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Très rare. Beau à Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, gold half louis of the spectacles of 1729, Besançon mint. Obverse: draped bust to left; reverse: oval arms of France and Navarre under a crown. Very rare, Fine - Very Fine.)"

The type was struck 1726-39. Like all half louis, it is rare but there is little premium for rare dates. The Besançon mint struck this type 1727-29, 1732, 1734-35.

Recorded mintage: est. 2,400.

Specification: 4.08 g, 0.917 fine gold; this specimen is 3.99 g.
