from the Stack's Bowers February 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74789
SB225-74789r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74789 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1729-I. Limoges Mint. Louis XV. ICCS EF-40. A pleasing and evenly worn example, with medium honey yellow color and no distracting marks. The reverse exhibits some streaking on the planchet (as made)." This louis d'or aux lunettes is recorded for 1726-40 and is among the more common gold coins of the French ancien régime. The tight flan makes us wonder if this example was clipped.

Recorded mintage: 17,246[2].

Specification: 8.16 g, 0.917 fine gold, 20 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 800, Dr/2 № 540, Fr-461, KM 489.10 (unlisted date), Dupl-1640; Gad-340.
