Jean Elsen sale 133, lot 1252

This specimen was lot 1252 in Jean Elsen sale 133 (Brussels, June 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AV demi-louis d'or aux lunettes, 1728X, Amiens. D/ B. drapé à g., tête nue. R/ Ecus ovales de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Très rare. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, gold half louis of the spectacles of 1728, Amiens mint. Obverse: draped bust to left; reverse: oval arms of France and Navarre below a crown. Very rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The type was struck 1726-39. Like all half louis, it is rare but this issue is probably the most available of all demi-louis d'or. There is little premium for rare dates. The Amiens mint struck this type 1726, 1728 and 1730 only.

Recorded mintage: est. 1,600.

Specification: 4.08 g, 0.917 fine gold; this specimen is 4,03 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 808; Dr/2 № 541, Gad-329, Dupl-1641. Fr-462, KM 488.5.
