SB1024-74669r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74669 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1728-M. Toulouse Mint. Louis XV. NGC EF-45. Displaying with steel gray patina, this circulated but wholesome example has the typical adjustment makes one sees on these issues." This coin is an écu aux branches d'olivier from the Toulouse mint. This coin was part of the great coinage reform of Cardinal Fleury which finally terminated the manipulations which had disrupted the economy since the 1690's. Toulouse mint issues are known for the entire span of the type (1726-40) but most dates are average (neither rare nor common). The Toulouse mint survived until 1837.

Recorded mintage: 258,761, a better date (361,786 per Numista).

Specification: 29.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 819, Dav-1330; KM-486.13; Gad-321.
