France 1728-V ecu
This specimen was lot 33478 in Heritage sale 3114 (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $2,640. The lot description[1] noted, "France: Louis XV Ecu 1728-V MS64 NGC, Troyes mint. A charming type, rarely seen as fine as this, presented here with a product of a lesser encountered mint location. Incredibly lustrous and boasting a pewter-gray patina accented with electric blue highlights. A rare treat for the Ecu specialist." This coin is an écu aux branches d'olivier from the Troyes mint. Troyes mint issues are known for the entire span of the type (1726-40) but most dates are rare, with this one being the only one close to common.
Recorded mintage: 136,067, a common date, probably the most common for the mint[2].
Specification: 29.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39 mm diameter.
