France 1728D demi ecu rev JElsen 265-794.jpg

This specimen was lot 794 in Jean Elsen list 265 (Brussels, July-September 2013) where it was offered for €400 (about US$528 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AR demi-écu aux rameaux d'olivier, 1728 D, Lyon. Droit: B. habillé à gauche, décoré de la croix du Saint-Esprit. Revers: Ecu de France couronné, entre deux rameaux d'olivier. presque Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XV (1715-74), silver half écu 'of the olive branch' of 1728, Lyon mint. Obverse: uniformed bust to left wearing the Order of the Holy Spirit; reverse: crowned arms of France between two olive branches. about extremely fine.)"

Shown is a demi-écu aux branches d'olivier ("half écu with olive wreath") struck at Lyon 1726-30 and 1733 during the reign of Louis XV of France. This coin was part of the great coinage reform of Cardinal Fleury which finally terminated the manipulations which had disrupted the economy since the 1690's. Unfortunately, after a good start in 1726-27, mintages of the demi-écu dwindled and most dates from the 1730's are quite scarce.

Specification: 14.74 g, 0.917 fine silver, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by J.-C. Röettiers. This specimen is 14,63 g.

Recorded mintage: 372,800[2], a better date but not rare.
