France (1461-74)-Angers ecu d'or Fr-312
This specimen was lot 20167 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu d'Or a La Couronne, ND (1461). Angers Mint. Louis XI (1461-83). NGC MS-64. Angers mint (dot under 7th letter). Boldly struck on a broad, round planchet displaying full legends on both sides. A premium example with glowing luster and excellent eye appeal." We spy a dot on the obverse legend near the right crowned lys which, by careful counting, marked the seventh letter of the legend, i.e., the Angers mint. Duplessy notes that this issue had a face value of 27 sols, 6 deniers tournois. The second emission of 1474 (Dupl-539A) had the weight reduced to 3.40 g and the value raised to 30 sols, 6 deniers.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.44 g, .963 fine gold.
Catalog reference: Fr-312; Dupl-539; Ciani-741.
