France SB118-22485r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22485 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu d'Or, ND. Tours Mint. Louis XI (1461-83). NGC AU-50. Nearly full legends on both sides. Lustrous and attractive." This écu d'or au soleil superseded the écu d'or à la couronne from earlier in the reign. The dot under the O of LVDOVICVS is in the fourth position, indicating Montpellier, not Tours as noted in the auction description. It had a face value of 33 sols tournois. The legend should start with a crown.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, .963 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-314; Dupl-544; Ciani-745.
