Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1029

This specimen was lot 1029 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €360 (about US$513 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XI (1461-1483), AR gros de roi, décembre 1461, Lyon (trèfle en fin de légende). D/ Trois lis sous une couronne. R/ Croix fleurdelisée, cantonnée d'un point au 1er. Rare Belle patine. Très Beau à Superbe. Provient de Bourgey, Paris, juin 1988. (kingdom of France, Louis XI, 1461-83, silver king's groat, December 1461, Lyon mint. Obverse: three lilies under a crown; reverse: floriate cross with a dot in the first canton. Rare, nice toning. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

Altho the English groat was worth fourpence, the French gros was worth 33 deniers tournois. This specimen is marked as a product of the Lyon mint by the trefoil at the end of the reverse legend.
