Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 972

This specimen was lot 972 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €650 (about US$845 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips de Stoute (1384-1404), AR groot rozebeker, 1384-1386, Mechelen. Muntunie met Johanna van Brabant. Vz/ Een krans met vijf rozen boven de wapenschilden van Bourgondië en Brabant-Limburg. In het veld drie mispelbladeren. Kz/ Leeuwenschild op een kruis bestaande uit acht drakenkoppen. Mooi rond en goed geslagen exemplaar. Zeldzaam in die kwaliteit. Zeer Fraai à Prachtig. (county of Flanders, Philip the Bold, 1384-1404, silver groat, circa 1384-1386, Mechelen mint. Joint issue with Johanna van Brabant. Obverse: A wreath with five roses above the coats of arms of Burgundy and Brabant-Limburg. Three medlar flowers in the field. Reverse: Lion shield over a cross consisting of eight dragon heads. Nice round and well struck example, Rare in that quality, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

Philip, duke of Burgundy, married the daughter of Louis II de Male, count of Flanders, uniting the two houses against the authority of the king of France.
