Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1798

This specimen was lot 1798 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €5,000 (about US$7,125 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips de Stoute (1384-1404), AV gouden schild, 1384-1386, Mechelen. Vz/ De graaf, gekroond met rozen, gezeten onder een gotisch baldakijn, met in de rechterhand een opgeheven zwaard en de linker rustend op een leeuwenschild. Kz/ Gebloemd kruis in een vierpas. Vier rozen buiten de inspringende hoeken. Zeldzaam. Prachtig. Uit onze veiling 60, 11 december 1999, 1923. (county of Flanders, Philip the Bold, 1384-1404, undated gold shield, Mechelen mint. Obverse: the count, crowned with roses, seated under a Gothic canopy, with a raised sword in the right hand and a lion's shield on the left; reverse: floriate cross in a quadrilobe, four roses in the corners. Rare, Extremely Fine.)"

This type was also struck at Ghent. Philip the Bold married the daughter and heir of Louis de Male, thereby attaching the county of Flanders to his domain and vastly increasing his power.
