Flanders (1389-1404) 1/2 groat
This specimen was lot 1253 in Jean Elsen sale 151 (Brussels, June 2022), where it sold for €320 (about US$400 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips de Stoute (1384-1404), AR halve groot botdrager, 1389-1404, Gent, Mechelen en Brugge. Vz/ Zittende leeuw n. l. Kz/ Lang gevoet kruis op het Bourgondisch wapenschild. Zeer zeldzaam Klein defekt aan de rand. goede Zeer Fraai. Uit de verzameling Paul De Witte. Afkomstig uit de verzameling Fürstenberg, veiling Nomisma, Nussbaum, Zürich, 26 februari 1934, 89 en uit onze veiling 87, 11 maart 2006, 727. (county of Flanders, Philip the Bold, 1384-1404, half groat botdrager, Ghent, Mechelen or Bruges mint. Obverse: seated lion left; reverse: Burgundian arms over a long cross. Very scarce, minor edge defect, good Very Fine.)"
This is the halve groot botdrager which accompanied the well known "double gros botdrager", issued in large numbers from Flanders (shown here), Brabant and Holland. Single groats were also struck tho much less famous.
