The first specimen was lot 471 in Jean Elsen sale 137 (Brussels, June 2018), where it sold for €130 (about US$181 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Lodewijk van Male (1346-1384), AR dubbele groot (plak), 1e uitgifte (1365-1367), Gent. Met peterselieblad. Vz/ Zittende leeuw n. l. met toernooihelm. Kz/ Kort gebloemd kruis met dubbel omschrift. Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, Louis de Male, 1346-84, silver double groat or plaque, first issue of 1365-67, Ghent mint, parsley leaf mint mark. Obverse: seated and helmeted lion; reverse: short armed floriate cross with double legend. Very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 70131 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, February 2020), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[2] noted, "BELGIUM. Flanders. 2 Groschen, ND (1346-84). Louis II de Male. NGC MS-61. De May-218. A very well detailed coin with unusually fine detail on the obverse devices and nearly complete peripheral legends on both sides, all endowed with pleasing gray to almond toning." The third specimen was lot 73080 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[3] noted, "BELGIUM. Flanders. Double Gros, ND (1346-84). Louis II de Male. NGC AU-55. Despite the crude nature of the strike, this decently detailed example provides original dark toning and luster hidden in the protected elements of the design." The fourth specimen was lot 1376 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €140 (about US$177 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[4] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Lodewijk van Male (1346-1384), AR dubbele groot (plak), 1e uitgifte (1365-1367), Gent. Met peterselieblad. Vz/ Zittende leeuw n. l. met toernooihelm. Kz/ Kort gebloemd kruis met dubbel omschrift. Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, Louis de Male, 1346-84, silver double groat or plak, first issue, circa 1365-67, Ghent mint, with parsley leaf. Obverse: helmeted lion left; reverse: short floriate cross inside a double line legend. Very fine.)"

Louis II de Male was count of Flanders when that province was one of the richest regions of Europe. Nominally part of France, Louis refused to pay homage to either the king of France or the king of England, steering a neutral course during the Hundred Years War. Later, he married his daughter to Philip, duke of Burgundy, uniting the two houses against the authority of the king of France.
