Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 20111
SB121-20111r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20111 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "FAEROE ISLANDS. 10 Ore, 1941. PCGS SPECIMEN-66 Gold Shield. A VERY RARE proof of record issue, struck by the Danish government for use in the Faeroe Islands. Wonderfully produced and preserved, this coin shows a high degree of reflectivity in the fields and soft contrast over the raised designs. This is the only example seen by PCGS to date with a single piece appearing in the NGC census as well (that piece graded as a PROOF-66)." This specimen is one of a series struck for Denmark in London while Denmark was under Nazi occupation. Denominations also included one, two, five and 25 øre. It is the only time special coinage was struck for the islands, which lie in the North Sea to the north of Britain.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper-nickel, 17.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-4.
