Heritage sale 3064, lot 30953
England H3064-30953r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30953 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Elizabeth I (1558-1603) gold 1/4 Angel 1584-86 AU53 NGC, London mint, Sixth issue, Escallop mm, St. Michael slaying dragon/square-topped shield within ship, mast dividing E and rose. An attractive specimen, slightly double-struck but otherwise sharp with full detail present. Richly colored with original surfaces, a slight tinge of red just beginning to emerge within the legend; a very rare denomination and even more so in this appealing certification." This quarter angel was tariffed at one shilling and eight pence (one twelfth of a pound). Friedberg says this is a fifth issue but we side with Spink in calling it a sixth issue.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: gold, 1.29 g (20 grains).

Catalog reference: Fr-213, S-2533, North-2007 (R).
