England (1561-71) shilling
The first specimen was lot 22416 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $282. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, ND (1561-71). Elizabeth I (1558-1603). PCGS Genuine--Damage, VF Details Secure Holder. Milled coinage issue. Small size, about 29 mm in diameter. Nicely struck with decorated dress showing its multiple patterns and individual strands of hair standing out. The details designation stems from a small peck mark placed between the crown and star mintmark. A very handsome example of this first milled issue of Britain with deep toning throughout the legends and attractive sunset hued toning in the fields of the obverse." The second specimen was lot 2446 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $940. The catalog description[2] noted, "Shilling, ND (1561-71). Elizabeth I (1558-1603). NGC EF-45. Milled coinage issue, small size, about 29 mm in diameter. A well struck example of this first milled issue of Britain with decorated dress showing its multiple patterns and individual strands of hair standing out with attractive dark toning which deepens towards the edge with traces of iridescent.
