Stack's Bowers September 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 75382

This specimen was lot 75382 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $1,620. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, ND (1554-58). London Mint; mm: Lis. Philip & Mary. PCGS VF-35. Obverse: Crowned bust left; Reverse: Long cross fourchee. A VERY RARE portrait Penny of Philip and Mary, and especially elusive in this problem-free quality. Well-detailed, with some evidence of circulation present in the central areas but strong legibility to the peripheral legends. An admirable survivor and a true prize in this state. From the Richard August Collection." This rare type accompanied halfgroats (S-2509) and groats (S-2508). A base silver version (S-2510A) was also struck, which circulated as a half penny.
