This specimen was lot 24871 in Heritage sale 3032 (Chicago, April 2014), where it sold for $12,925. The catalog description[1] noted, "Philip and Mary Shilling 1554, XF45 NGC. Dark russet-gray tone accentuates the appeal of this piece. It bears outstanding portraits and has been meticulously maintained by generations of numismatists." This coin was hammered, not machine struck; weak and off-center strikes are normal. This coin was issued during Mary's brief marriage to Philip II of Spain, hence the dual portraits.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.925 fine silver.
