This specimen was lot 20089 in Ponterio sale 176 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $55,812. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Mary, 1553-1554. Fine Sovereign of 30 Shillings, MDLIIII. Pomegranate. Very Rare MDLIIII Fine Sovereign Queen seated on throne holding orb and scepter; portcullis at her feet. Rv. Tudor rose with shield. Considered a rarer date. An impressive example, like all the Fine Sovereigns in the Law Collection (we have started to lose count!). Uniformly bright, and featuring an exceptional strike with full legends. Ex: Spink/Noble, 1993." The fine sovereign was thirty shillings (two ryals or three angels) and the largest gold coin of Mary I. It is noted for 1553-54.
