Stack's Bowers 2026 ANA sale, lot 44521
SB826-44521r.jpg

This specimen was lot 44521 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, September 2026), where it sold for $390.40. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Groat, ND (1544-47). Southwark Mint. Henry VIII. PCGS VF-35. From the John P. Burnham Collection." Numista comments, "Toward the end of Henry VIII's reign, the silver was progressively debased from 9oz.2dwt. (.758) in 1544, through 6oz.2dwt (.508) in 1545, to 4oz.2dwt. (.342) in 1546. At this last standard, the blanched silver surface of the coins soon wore away to reveal the copper alloy beneath which earned for Henry the nickname 'Old Coppernose'." These were struck at London, Bristol, Canterbury, York and Southwark (shown here). The reverse states "CIV[IT]AS LONDON", as Southwark was then a southern suburb.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.6 g, 0.342 fine silver, 26 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: S-2371; N-1845.
