This specimen was lot 33746 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $528. The catalog description[1] noted, "Egypt: United Arab Republic gold Proof 'Sphinx' 50 Pounds AH 1414/1993 PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC." This NCLT was one of a series issued to honor ancient Egyptian art treasures. Friedberg renumbered the Egyptian gold coins in the 9th edition and, in the process, lumped all the two dozen issues of the Art Treasures series of 1993-94 under Fr-258, rendering the Friedberg number useless for attribution. We have resorted to the KM number instead.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 8.50 g, 0.900 fine gold, AGW 0.246 oz.
Catalog reference: Fr-258 (formerly Fr-170), KM 776.
