This specimen was lot 41084 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "EGYPT. Pound, AH 1316 (1973). PCGS Genuine--Scratch, Unc Details. Struck to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the National Bank of Egypt." While the National Bank was issuing this self-congratulatory NCLT, Sadat launched a surprise attack on Israel which evolved into the Yom Kippur War. While Israel managed to regroup and force the Egyptian army back to the line of the Sinai Canal, the Egyptians gave a good account of themselves and were not crushed. Both sides then decided further conflicts were pointless, and in 1980, Egypt and Israel signed a peace treaty. This denomination was used for numerous gold commemoratives until 1982. This design also appeared on a copper-nickel five piastres (KM 437) and gold five pounds (KM 441).
