Dominican Rep 1877 2-5 centavos rev DSLR.jpg

This one year type is the scarcest of a series of 2½ centavos struck intermittently between 1877 and 1888. The later types replace the cross with an emblem of a book on a shield (KM 7). A brass one centavo and copper-nickel five centavos also appeared in 1877. In 1891, the coinage was reformed such that 100 centésimos = 1 franco (= 1 French franc). In 1897, the coinage reverted to conventional centavos and pesos. No further coinage was emitted until 1937.

Recorded mintage: 21,000.

Specification: copper-nickel, 1.1 g, 15.5 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: KM 4.
