Dom Rep SB1019-71324r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71324 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. Centavo, 1877. Scovill (Waterbury) Mint. NGC MS-63. A seldom seen issue, this brass centavo features brilliant surfaces and intense luster, muted only by a few scattered spots on the obverse." This one year type, tho the only one of its denomination emitted in the 19th century, is common. A copper-nickel 2½ and five centavos also appeared in 1877. In 1891, the coinage was reformed such that 100 centésimos = 1 franco (= 1 French franc). In 1897, the coinage reverted to conventional centavos and pesos. No further coinage was emitted until 1937.
