Steve Album sale 54, lot 1013

This specimen was lot 1013 in Steve Album Auction 54 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2026), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: AE centavo, 1878, essai strike, a wonderful proof quality example! PCGS graded PF64 RB." Numerous essais of this issue exist, struck in bronze (shown here) and nickel. Wikipedia comments of the nineteenth century in the Dominican Republic, "Political strife again prevailed in the following years; warlords ruled, military revolts were extremely common, and the nation amassed debt." The successive regimes could not afford coinage and this design never went into production. No coinage would be struck until 1891.
