Dominican Republic 1877 5 centavos
This specimen was lot 33859 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "Dominican Republic: Republic 5 Centavos 1877 MS62 Prooflike NGC. A lightly golden minor without the typical weakness found in the center of the book and markedly glassy fields." This one year type, tho the only one of its denomination emitted in the 19th century, is somewhat scarce. A brass centavo and copper-nickel 2½ centavos also appeared in 1877. In 1891, the coinage was reformed such that 100 centésimos = 1 franco (= 1 French franc). In 1897, the coinage reverted to conventional centavos and pesos. No further coinage was emitted until 1937.
