This specimen was lot 42709 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. 1/4 Real, 1844. PCGS AU-53 Gold Shield. Decent strike and no distracting marks. Dark toned." This one year type was struck in bronze. A second issue was made in brass in 1848 (KM 2). Political turmoil and economic depression reduced the supply of coinage in the Dominican Republic and throughout the Caribbean.
