Deventer 1666 daalder Dav-4875
This specimen was lot 1136 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €130 (about US$180 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, DEVENTER, AR leeuwendaalder, 1666. Vlekjes. Gereinigd. (Netherlands, city of Deventer, silver lion dollar of 1666. Spotty, cleaned, Very Fine.)"
This type was struck 1664-68. Other dates include 1640, 1662-64, 1684-91 and 1698. The municipal mints' habit of coining to short weight and short alloy infuriated the Estates General, which spent most of the seventeenth century on a campaign to close them all.
Recorded mintage: 21,000.
Specification: 27.68 g, 0.750 fine silver, this specimen 27,14 g.
