Jean Elsen sale 149, lot 1898

This specimen was lot 1898 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €400 (about US$542 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, DEVENTER, Stad, AR zilveren rijder (dukaton), 1664. Vz/ Ridder te paard r. boven stadswapen. Kz/ Gekroond Generaliteitswapen gehouden door twee gekroonde leeuwen. Gereinigd. Vlekjes. Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, city of Deventer, silver rider or ducaton of 1664. Obverse: mounted knight charges over the provincial arms; reverse: crowned arms of the Generality supported by two crowned lions. Cleaned, Very Fine.)"

This type was struck with a moor's head mintmark (KM 62.1, 1662-64) and a sitting dog mintmark (KM 62.2, shown here, 1664-68). It is not listed as rare but this is the first we have posted on this site.

Recorded mintage: 13,000 (both mintmarks).

Specification: 32.78 g, 0.941 fine silver, this specimen 32,52 g.
