Schulman 388-0084r.jpg

This specimen was lot 84 in Schulman auction 388 (Amsterdam, December 2025), where it sold for €1,900 (about US$2,677 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Nooddaalder van 30 stuiver, DEVENTER, 1672, Silver, Noodmunten, geslagen naar aanleiding van het beleg door Bernard van Galen, de Bisschop van Munster 1672., STEDELIJKE MUNTSLAG TE DEVENTER op vierkant plaatje. Gekroonde Deventer adelaar, daaronder aparte stempel A° 1672. Kz. glad. RR Goudkleurig gepatineerd. Vrijwel prachtig. (uniface siege dollar of thirty stuivers, city of Deventer, struck in response to the siege by Bernard van Galen, the Bishop of Münster, in 1672. Obverse: MUNICIPAL COINAGE OF DEVENTER on a square plate. Crowned Deventer eagle; below it, a separate punch-mark: A[NN]° 1672. Reverse: plain.)"

Half, quarter and eighth dollars were also struck. Bernard von Galen attacked the Netherlands at the behest of Louis XIV and succeeded in capturing Bredevoort, Deventer and Zwolle. He then unsuccessfully besieged Groningen; that defeat caused him to retreat from the Netherlands and leave the war. Numista hints that the siege coinage was actually made after the surrender of the town.

Recorded mintage: 530 per Numista.

Specification: 28 g, 0.925 fine silver, 35 mm square, this specimen 28.42 g.
