Stack's Bowers 2026 NYINC sale, lot 43248
SB126-43248r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43248 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Deventer. Lion Dollar (Daalder), 1687. Deventer Mint. NGC MS-61. The finer of just two seen for the date in the NGC census, and the only such Mint State example, this enchanting crown offers some appealing toning and glints of brilliance among the protected areas." This type was struck 1684-88 and 1691. The obverse legend is "MO · ARG · CIV · IMP BEL · DAVENTR", whereas the earlier Dav-4875 had "MO · ARG · CIVIT · IMPER · DAVENT". The municipal mints' habit of coining to short weight and short alloy infuriated the Estates General, which spent most of the seventeenth century on a campaign to close them all.

Recorded mintage: 200,000.

Specification: 27.68 g, 0.750 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-4876; KM-80; Delm-859.
