Denmark 1628-RD 6 skilling
This specimen was lot 10168 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €168 (about US$175). The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. 6 Skilling, 1628. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IV. NGC VF-35. In the L. E. Bruun catalog from 1928 this coin is listed under Glückstadt. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." Throughout the sixteenth century, one speciedaler was 96 skilling; at some point in the 1620's, it was raised to 144 skilling and then back to 96 skilling. When the dust had settled, the speciedaler, formerly four marks or 1⅓ krone, was now six marks or 1½ krone. This type was struck 1628-29 along with a six skilling with an arms obverse (KM 109). Christian IV (r. 1588-1648), king of Denmark and duke of Schleswig-Holstein, had a long but only moderately successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1.77 g, 0.781 fine silver, 19 mm diameter.
