from the Stack's Bowers February 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 10171

This specimen was lot 10171 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €105 (about US$110). The catalog description^[1] noted, "DENMARK. Skilling, 1629. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IV. NGC EF-40. Experimental bracteate minting with high silver content. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." Throughout the sixteenth century, one speciedaler was 96 skilling; at some point in the 1620's, it was raised to 144 skilling and then back to 96 skilling. When the dust had settled, the speciedaler, formerly four marks or 1⅓ krone, was now six marks or 1½ krone. This type was struck 1629 only. Christian IV (r. 1588-1648), king of Denmark and duke of Schleswig-Holstein, had a long but only moderately successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain.
