Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection, lot 1035
SB924-1035r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1035 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €66,000 (about US$73,141 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Best of Only Two in Private Hands, DENMARK. Ducat, 1627. Wolfenbüttel Mint. Christian IV. NGC EF-45. Struck for count Philipp Reinhard von Solms-Hohensolms (1613 - 1635) as viceregent of the Danish King. EXTREMELY RARE and displaying a nice luster with only limited signs of actual handling. Quite lovely and yet attractive for the type.

Wolfenbüttel in Lower Saxony was controlled by King Christian IV for a brief period during the Thirty-Years-War. The coinage produced there in his name was made from the gold and silver dinnerware found in the castle. Very few of these gold coins have survived to this day."

Christian IV (r. 1588-1648) had a long but not particularly successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.46 g.
