Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection, lot 1028
SB924-1028r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1028 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €38,400 (about US$42,555 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Extremely Rare 2 Krone in Gold, DENMARK. Gold 2 Krone, 1619. Elsinore Mint; Privy Mark: Crossed Clubs. Christian IV. NGC MS-62. Mintmaster: Johan Post. An EXCEEDINGLY RARE type and the best of the only three to four examples in private hands, presenting both considerable amounts of luster and a warm gold toning. Nicely struck and an example certainly not lacking for beauty."

This series of gold coins included a half krone (Fr-56), single krone (Fr-55) and double krone (shown here). Only the double krone was struck after 1619, being produced intermittently until 1648. Varieties exist in the arabesques bracketing the arms. Christian IV (r. 1588-1648) had a long but not particularly successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 5.94 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 5.94 g.
