Sincona sale 4, lot 4669

This specimen was lot 4669 in Sincona sale 4 (Zürich, October 2011), where it sold for 900 CHF (about US$1,198 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Kaiserreich Danzig, Freie Stadt 5 Gulden 1932. Marienkirche. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Free city of Danzig, five gulden of 1932, for the Marienkirche. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type is one of two commemorative five gulden issued for Danzig in 1932; the other honored the seaport. Danzig, long part of Prussia and then Germany, was briefly independent 1919-39. Annexed by the Nazis, it fell to Poland in 1945 and was renamed Gdansk.

Recorded mintage: 430,000.
