Danish West Indies 1862 20 cents
This specimen was lot 20373 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "DANISH WEST INDIES. 20 Cents, 1862. Copenhagen Mint. Frederik VII. PCGS PROOFLIKE-64 Gold Shield. A truly exceptional offering of this classic SCARCITY, offering a needle-sharp strike along with frosted devices set gracefully upon reflective fields that exhibit few distracting marks." This type was issued 1859 and 1862 along with one, three, ten and five cent coins. Danish currency endured several "reforms" in the nineteenth century. For the West Indies, the decimal conversion occurred in 1858, with twenty cents = one franc. The Danish West Indies were sold to the United States in 1917.
