This type was issued in 1859 along with one, five, ten and twenty cent coins. Unlike the other denominations, the three cents was never issued again. Danish currency endured several "reforms" in the nineteenth century. For the West Indies, the decimal conversion occurred in 1858, with twenty cents = one franc. The Danish West Indies were sold to the United States in 1917.
Recorded mintage: 291,000 plus 10 specimens.
