Danish West Indies 1859 cent
This specimen was lot 44302 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "DANISH WEST INDIES. Cent, 1859. Frederik VII. NGC PROOFLIKE-63 Brown. A pleasing Cent with decent strike and light brown to shimmering red-brick color, seemingly a lot more "Red" than a Brown designation would suggest." This type was issued in 1859-60 along with three, five, ten and twenty cent coins. Danish currency endured several "reforms" in the nineteenth century. For the West Indies, the decimal conversion occurred in 1858, with twenty cents = one franc. The Danish West Indies were sold to the United States in 1917.
