Danish West Indies 1859 10 cents
This specimen was lot 30473 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,762.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Frederick VII 10 Cents 1859, PL65 NGC. A multitude of die striations (as made) create luster in the fields with a light overlying sprinkling of tone. Essentially mark-free and scarce as such." This type was issued 1859 and 1862 along with one, three, twenty and five cent coins. Danish currency endured several "reforms" in the nineteenth century. For the West Indies, the decimal conversion occurred in 1858, with twenty cents = one franc. The Danish West Indies were sold to the United States in 1917.
