This specimen was lot 30678 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 'Castro & John Paul II' Proof 100 Pesos (1 oz) 1997 Proof Details (Rim Damage) NGC. Struck to commemorate the meeting of Fidel Castro and Pope John Paul II at the Vatican. A rim bruise at 8 o'clock has resulted in the "details" grade assignment by NGC." Desperate for foreign exchange, Cuba has issued large numbers of NCLT's, many only vaguely related to Cuba. This coin was issued on the occasion of the papal visit to Havana. In exchange for the legitimacy conferred on him by shaking hands with the pope, Castro agreed to stop harassing Catholics and permitted their churches to reopen. Other 100 pesos for 1997 include KM 709, 929, 933, 934.
