Correggio 1603 tallero Dav-3876
This specimen was lot 687 in Fritz Rudolf Künker GmbH & Co. KG Auction 359 (Osnabrück, Germany, January 2022), where it sold for 3,200 EUR (about US$4,359 including buyer's fees). The lot description noted,
"ITALIEN. CORREGGIO. Camillo, 1580-1597-1605. Tallero (70 Soldi) 1603. Beischlag zu den holländischen Löwentalern. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 63 (6057038009). Von großer Seltenheit. Prachtexemplar. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Die niederländischen Löwentaler waren bis in den Orient als Handelsmünzen sehr beliebt. Sie wurden daher verschiedentlich - besonders in Oberitalien - nachgeahmt. (Italy, county of Correggio, Camillo, 1597-1605, tallero of 70 soldi of 1603. Imitation of a the Dutch lion daalder. Graded NGC MS 63. Of great rarity, Magnificent specimen, Extremely fine to uncirculated. The Dutch lion thalers were very popular as trade coins even in the Orient. They were therefore imitated on various occasions - especially in northern Italy.)"
The count struck several talleros in imitation of Dutch lion daalders. This one was also struck in 1600 (Dav-8268). We also note Dav-3877 with the obverse legend, "MO. NO. CAM. - AVS. CO. CO." Dav-3878 has the reverse legend, "MONE*NVOVA*FATTA*PER*SOL*SET*." Dav-3879 has the obverse legend, "CAM. AVST. CIVIT. CORR. COM. E. C." A third, doubtful type (KM MB58) has the reverse legend, "ORIGINIS. INCLIT. SIGN. INSI." The variant legends helped the count evade charges of counterfeiting. In 1630, Siro d'Austria was fined by emperor Ferdinand for uttering false coin and he was forced to sell his principality to the duke of Modena.
