Correggio (1597-1605) tallero Dav-3877
This specimen was lot 536 in Nomisma Arte auction 66 (Verona, Italy, November 2022), where it sold for 4,100 euro (about US$5,092 including buyer's fees). The lot description noted,
"CORREGGIO Camillo d'Austria (1597-1605) Tallero da 70 soldi - MI RRRR Splendido esemplare di questa rarissima tipologia, SPL+. (Correggio, Camilo of Austria, 1597-1605, tallero of seventy soldi, very rare, splendid example of this excessively rare type, choice extremely fine."
The count struck several talleros in imitation of Dutch lion daalders. We note Dav-3877 (shown here) has the obverse legend, "MO. NO. CAM. - AVS. CO. CO." Dav-3878 has the reverse legend, "MONE*NVOVA*FATTA*PER*SOL*SET*." Dav-3879 has the obverse legend, "CAM. AVST. CIVIT. CORR. COM. E. C." A third, doubtful type (KM MB58) has the reverse legend, "ORIGINIS. INCLIT. SIGN. INSI." The variant legends helped the count evade charges of counterfeiting. In 1630, Siro d'Austria was fined by emperor Ferdinand for uttering false coin and he was forced to sell his principality to the duke of Modena.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 26,72 g.
