Sincona sale 46, lot 551

This specimen was lot 551 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 9,000 CHF (about US$10,799 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALY, Repubblica Cisalpina, Camillo d'Austria, 1597-1605. Ongaro o. J. MONETA « NOVA « - « AVR « COR(rigii) « D(ominus) C« A(millus). Stehender Graf in Rüstung von vorne, in der Rechten eine Hellebarde, die Linke in die Hüfte gestützt. Im Feld G - P. Rv. « TV « NOS « AB « HOST « PROTEGE «. Sitzende Maria mit Kind von vorne. Von grösster Seltenheit. Nur dieses Exemplar bekannt. Gutes sehr schön. Doppelschlag. (Italy, Cisalpine Republic, Camillo of Austria, 1597-1605, undated ungaro. Obverse: the count stands in full armor with halberd in the right hand and the left hand on hip; reverse: the Virgin and Child seated on a cloud. Of the highest rarity. The only known specimen, Good very fine, Double struck.)"

Despite the cataloguers' best efforts, this coin has nothing to do with Napoleon's puppet state Cisalpine Republic, which existed two centuries after this coin was minted. The counts of Correggio possessed enough independence to issue a few coins in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries before the province was annexed to Modena, where we have filed this coin. This specimen was offered again as lot 1977 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 6,000 CHF (about US$8,316 including buyer's fees).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.45 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.41 g.
