Colombia 1872-B 20 pesos
This specimen was lot 12291 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1872 20 Pesos. Bogotá mint. AU-53 (PCGS). Rich deep yellow gold surfaces show highlights of rose and pale blue, with satiny luster over the smooth fields. Excellent aesthetic appeal for this grade level, though we note a thin diagonal scratch over the cheek and a little rim nick above 3 in the weight. A handsome piece. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins. From Stack's, August 1971." This type was struck at Bogotá 1862-77, Medellin 1867-72 and Popayán 1863-78. Despite the steady issue, the type is rare and expensive.
Recorded mintage: 1,471.
Specification: 32.26 g, 0.900 fine gold, .933 troy oz AGW.
