CNG Lissner sale, lot 1467

This specimen was lot 1467 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $4,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA, Republica de Nueva Granada. 1830-1859. AR 10 Reales. Popayán mint. Dated 1847. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 63. Lustrous extremely choice brilliant uncirculated with just a hint of patina on the border of this piece. None graded higher and extremely rare in this grade. A somewhat better date that rarely shows up. Purchased from Houston Numismatic Exchange, June 1970." This type was struck 1847-49 at the Bogotá and Popayán mints without mintmarks and is scarce but not rare in circulated condition. It is the first type struck in Colombia to the metric standard; the second being KM 111, struck 1850-51. It was replaced by a silver peso (KM 118) struck 1855-59 which is quite a bit more available. The richly symbolic obverse design has made this type among the more popular South American crowns.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, this specimen Ø37 mm, 25.28 g, 6h axis.

Catalog reference: KM 107; Cr 159.
